New Year Card
2016

Happy Year of the Monkey and Festival of Spring!

The Sheep is gone, replaced by Traveller
whose strides are each ten thousand leagues.
With Peace attained, e’en the Void takes on a meaning
past all common bounds.

Footnote: The Monkey in legend is likened to the Mind, which can flit over large distances and penetrate great depths. In 西游记, the Monkey, nicknamed the Traveller, has magical powers allowing him to cover with one bound 108, 000 li = 54, 000 km, i.e. about ten thousand leagues, and has also a Buddhist epithet 悟空, meaning “understand the Void”.

With best wishes for the New Year of the Monkey,

Bonne année du singe et bonne fête du printemps !

Alors que le troupeau de moutons s’éloigne, quel plaisir
de revoir vivant le bonze errant !
Un courant favorable s’installe, quelle chance de retrouver le Roi des singes !

Avec mes meilleurs vœux pour la nouvelle année ;
